I'm tired but it's the good type of tired. You know, the type of tired from walking 20 miles on Saturday and then 10 miles on Sunday! The Atlanta 2 Day Walk for Breast Cancer was a big success! I raised $1,240.00 and my team Jay Walkers Anonymous! raised $3, 385.00. The grand total for this year's walk was over a 1 million dollars raised! which means at least $700,000 goes back into the metro Atlanta community! I am very proud to say that I have personally raise over my three walks (two 3-day Walks and this 2 day Walk) a grand total of $5,470.00 in the fight against breast cancer!
Here we are roughing it at the Hilton! Dawn and I have only done the 3 Day Breast Cancer walks before so that meant sleeping & eating in tents, showering in semi-trucks, port-potties and using sinks out in a field. Let me tell ya, that bed felt damn good Saturday night at 8:30pm.
There was a lot of dancing Friday night before folks began walking the next morning! Here is the woman, Randi Passoff (also a breast cancer survivor) that started the Atlanta 2 day when Avon pulled out of Atlanta a few years back. Her husband is the crazy guy in the safety cone hat. You can't say we don't have fun at these things. Must say even though I only spent a few minutes here and there with Randi, she is really an amazing woman!
Found my Mom's sign within the first six miles.
Hey, they said to hydrate! I'll tell y'all, I have never drank so much water and Power Aid in my life! Last year when I did the Avon 3 Day Breast Cancer walk there were so many people getting IVs and being sent to the hospital from dehydration it scared the BeJesus out of me! I was freaking out if I wasn't finished with my water bottle by each B'rest stop and I kept right on chug-a-lugging the water even when we got back to the hotel. Between going to sleep at 8:30 p.m and leaping out of bed at 5:30 a.m. I had to pee (desperately) 4 times that night! It is the only time in one's life that you really look at your pee color. One's focus is very centered on clear, clear, clear urine. Truly, that is all you think about. Well, that and your feet have to keep taking a step.
ah, you have no idea just how good that cold tile can feel on hot tired feet.
then The Man gave us the brilliant idea of ICE! Now why didn't I think of that? Course between us, all we had was one ziploc bag big enough to hold enough ice to cover our feet. So had to lie down to for both of us to use it. Which wouldn't have been an issue IF SOMEONE ELSE HAD BEEN THERE TO HELP US GET UP! It wasn't pretty folks. Notice the mole skin over my toes? My goal was for THIS YEAR not to lose a toenail. It's still kinda iffy on two toenails!
A girl's gotta stretch any where, any way and any time she can! Notice I'm barely awake. More coffee, please she whines.
Sunday morning about 7:30 a.m. with a 1,000 walkers leaving opening ceremony.
Our beloved Moto Crew. These Ladies and Gentleman are at every single corner always full of cheer and rockin music to keep us going. They along with the Gwinnett County Police and Fire Dept kept us safe from traffic. Big ole fat kudo's to Gwinnett Police and Fire Dept along with the City of Norcross! They were so involved and it is really wonderful to have such good community support.
Dawn and I being escorted down the red carpet y'all! to closing ceremonies. This is the only time I'll be walking that red carpet.
Dawn and her big brother, Darrell. He not only has a very busy full time job but also is running a new business but found the time to drive over from Alabama very late Friday night to volunteer and cheer us on through the weekend. What a guy! Aren't they the cutest thing?
The Man took us out to a super yummy late lunch celebration that of course included champagne! What a great guy I married!
So again I want to thank Kimberly, Bekka and Kate for donating. If anyone is interested in learning more about the Atlanta 2 Day Walk for Breast Cancer either check out their site or leave me a comment. Dawn and I will be doing it again in 2007 and are always open to more team members whether it be walkers, crew or volunteers! We'd love to have you join us and don't be thinking you CAN'T DO IT! I personally saw three women over 70 walking all 30 miles, a lady in a walking boot and I several folks fighting cancer. YOU TOO CAN DO IT.
As for me today, I'm drinking wine, it's medicinal and knitting away to my heart's content. I started the Child's Rainbow Scarf from Last Minute Knitted Gifts in the Noro Kureyon that Bekka gave me, on Friday night. Really like how the colors are turning out. Must say there are quite a few really wonderful projects in this gem of a book.
Yay! You guys are awesome!
