Long ago, okay maybe it was just 3 or 4 years ago, I was lucky enough to know as a newbie knitter that I needed to jump on getting in a class when Sally Melville came through town last time. That class was excellent and I sat right up front as I always did when there was an important class in school. Don't know what it is but when ever I hear Sally Melville talk about how to do something it just clicks. First of all it just makes plain sense in the whop yourself on the forehead "why didn't I think of that?" sort of common sense. But more importantly she makes the important parts of making a garment look good on you.
(little blurry but a flash going off in class would be rude)
The class I took today at the oh so fabulous of Fab-U-Lous Knitch coincides with her new book " Mother - Daughter Knits: 30 Designs to Flatter and Fit." She went through what lengths of different garments look good on a person at certain key areas and also what type of other garments to pair them with. Oh, there was very simple math involved to get the proportions to fit me. ME people ME which also means You if you do the math. Can you imagine knowing the simple details to make any pattern hit you just right at different parts of your body.
So after the math we got to cut out samples to try on our to own proportioned paper doll.
Really should have made my hair bigger, fuller and longer. Think my hair was that short when I was two. As crazy as it sounds trying out the paper sweaters with different paper bottoms I could clearly see what works on my body and what doesn't. All of a sudden it made perfect sense why a certain sweater that looks amazing on me with a certain pair of pants make me look and feel dowdy with a skirt. It just doesn't hit my body right that way. It all became rather clear how to take a pattern I love and making a few small adjustments will make it look great on me because the pattern will then have been tailored to fit me like it should.
After the class, I hung out downstairs at Knitch till the urge for late lunch and a glass of wine hit me. Dragged (using that term loosely) my partner in crime, Megan, out with me for a yummy lunch and a glass of Chardonnay. We also got to meet Ginger. Ain't she cute?
Once her father realized that the rest of us in the restaurant truly did not mind Ginger hanging out, she started working the room and making the rounds. What a spry girl of 16 years she was and a master of working the crowd of adoring fans.
I've always heard that about Sally Melville - that she has a way of making things CLICK!
I have a feeling that if (when?) I ever get to Knitch, I won't want to leave. :-)
